Mastering the Mental Game of Golf: Hypnotherapy for Peak Performance
Introduction
A growing number of golf professionals are working with hypnotherapists as it's been well documented that legends like Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus have used hypnosis to become unarguably the greatest players of all time.
More recently Golf Digest featured an article with Cam Davis’s Hypnotherapist talking about the psychology behind how golfers use hypnosis. Working with a hypnotherapist you learn how to control your thoughts to address mental blocks, enhance focus, improve confidence, and manage stress.
The Path to Focus and Concentration
Think of all your thoughts between each shot during a round of golf. The average golfer would think about their score, the people watching, where is the next bathroom, water, weather, and hunger at any given moment. In addition, outside thoughts such as personal relationships can occur which have little or nothing to do with your next shot.
These thoughts start to add up quickly and multiply to disrupt a player’s concentration. To control your own thoughts and to be completely present is what separates an amateur from a professional. The elimination of unwanted and unnecessary thoughts is the key to mental clarity during completion.
Routines
The mind and body operate subconsciously to conserve energy and move through the day effortlessly. Just imagine your morning routine and commute to work if you need to consciously think about every movement. You would be completely exhausted before even starting work.
Establishing a routine helps eliminate thoughts which disrupt your mental clarity. Start creating routines and patterns for your golf game. Where you put and find your clubs, tees, water bottle, and gloves should happen without a thought.
How you prepare for each shot is also a part of a routine for peak performance. How many practice swings do you take? How do you align your club and feet before each shot? Set up a routine for every club you use as each one demands a different preparation. The driver, hybrids, irons, sand wedge, and putter each require a different set up. While this does take thought, it too needs to be somewhat automatic to eliminate overthinking. If solid routines have been established the mind is still and ready to visualize your shot.
Imagery and Visualization
A perfect shot visualization should be one of the thoughts entering the mind while preparing to hit the ball. This type of mental training signifies that the individual is knowledgeable about golf and proficient, as the golfer utilizes muscle memory from the subconscious mind to execute the physical action. This flow state is present when the athlete performs at their peak. However, even professionals must visualize specific body mechanics they have practiced to achieve the perfect shot. The conscious mind can manage between five to seven thoughts before becoming overloaded which can hinder your shot. Visualize on where you want to ball to go and which body or club movements you need to focus on for success. Don’t over-think, simplify, and execute.
During hypnotherapy sessions when the client is deep in trance I create multiple perfect shots scenarios and then anchor them by pressing the non-dominant thumb and ring finger together. During competition the same imagery is brought back with simply pressing your fingers together. This is called an anchor. The imagery and relaxed state during hypnosis is connected to the player with just a simple action.
Another type of visualization is one in which during a session the client imagines they have already won the tournament or round of golf. This eliminates self doubt and instills the belief that victory will be achieved and increases confidence for the golfer. The brain often replicates what it visualizes and the body responds accordingly.
Thought Patterns
Hypnosis enhances positive thought patterns by working directly with the subconscious mind where they are rooted. Repeated sessions and exposure then makes significant changes to your conscious mind and the golfer becomes more aware of their inter-dialogue during competition.
Breaking down negative thought patterns during hypnotherapy is accomplished by eliminating judgement and self-criticism by not getting too excited after a great shot or too frustrated after a bad one. Maintaining emotional balance means not thinking about the past or the future, but remaining present and always focused on the next shot to the point where the score and outcome of the round is irrelevant.
Self-Hypnosis
Learning self-hypnosis is the final piece to master the mental side of golf. Clients are ready for self-hypnosis after four or five sessions as they become familiar with different states of mind. This can become a part of your daily routine before play or use during play to enter a flow state.
Conclusion
Hypnotherapy serves as a powerful tool for golfers seeking to improve their performance by learning to manage their thought patterns. By implementing routines, imagery, and self-hypnosis during competition players build the foundation for a quiet mind. For those ready to elevate their game, embracing hypnotherapy could be the missing link to mastering the art of focus and achieving success on the green.
